Nutrient Management

What are Nitrates?

Nitrate (NO3) is a compound of nitrogen and oxygen, that may be found in several different forms within terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Nitrate may be found naturally in air, soil, water, and some foods. While nitrate is essential for plant and animal survival and growth, excess amounts may cause water quality problems.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for drinking water at 10 parts per million (ppm).
