Preserving CRP Grasslands

Protecting grassland is a goal of the North Platte Natural Resources District.

In the next three years over 260,000 acres of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres will expire. Landowners will then have a decision to make.

Cost share funding is available to help keep these grasslands from being re-farmed. Applications are now being taken for land management options, including fencing windbreaks, wildlife habitat enhancements. See Program Information here or call the NRD or your local USDA-NRCS office.

Platte Basin Habitat Enhancement Project

The Platte Basin Habitat Enhancement Project (PBHEP) was established to provide an added solution to help landowners in Nebraska's Platte River Basin meet the region's water needs, for wildlife and for the state's valuable agricultural economy.

PBHEP helps landowners make transitions that can maintain economic health, while at the same time reduce depletions to the river. This can be accomplished by taking advantage of a variety of conservation projects such as easements, acre retirement or other options. See PBHEP Info and How To Sign Up here.

Know Your Ground Water Levels - USGS Info

In addition to the nearly 600 monitoring wells located throughout the North Platte NRD, we also use U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) monitoring sites to collect data for groundwater levels. Of the 21 USGS monitoring well sites in the state, 15 are located within the NPNRD.
