Each year in October and May the NPNRD assists with Branch Out, an educational program where area students learn about the importance of trees. NPNRD staff help students plant young Ponderosa and Juniper Pines on the hillsides near the Wildcat Hills Recreation Center and learn other fun facts about the usefullness of trees.
The Water Wonders Festival, sponsored by UN-L Extension with assistance from the NRD, has been held at the fairgrounds each April since the early 1990s. The daylong event provides area 5th graders with opportunities to explore different aspects of water conservation. From finding bugs that live in nearby streams to setting irrigation tubes, students get a hands-on appreciation for our water resources.
We're not afraid to gets students' hands dirty. Each fall and spring the NPNRD hosts several on-site school field trips to the Nine Mile Creek watershed area where high school students identify plant and insect varieties, and analyze the health of the watershed.
The NPNRD assists each year with the annual Land Judging and Range Judging contests for high school students, 4-H and FFA members. Participants are challenged to identify different soil types, range plants and seeds, and select best management practices for soil and range conditions. A State Land Judging and State Range Judging contest is also held each year.
